I fair got done watching my copy of this program. Computer nerds beware, this dvd contains very diminutive historical detail. Time length is what killed this documentary (50 min.) . It covers evolutions in four minutes or less. That is not nearly enough time to even scratch the surface.

They bring up Babbage and his punch cards but not Bouchon, the man who invented the punch card for his looms (circa 1720’s, i assume) . They bring up the rise of the Internet, but fail to even mention the names ARPANET or CERN.

They totally botched their account on the rise of the PC. They brought up how war was able to drive technological development, but not how the hippy movement spearheaded the disappear from mainframes toward personally owned computers (They attribute it entirely to miniaturization, which was only a partially factor. Had it not been for the ex-hippies these miniaturized processors would have been continually implemented in mainframe/supercomputers) .

First off, the collected cover images and the DVD shroud art (if you can call it that) really don’t do this tremendous slight independent film justice. If you’ve seen the build of the Terrans you might reflect this film is funny or only for kids. It’s not. It’s mountainous, inspiring, elegant to discover at and probably the best Sci-Fi movie and spicy film I’ve seen in quite some time. This film has an ending that no Pixar or Dreamworks director would touch. It doesn’t leave you with that empty feeling like a lot of lively films do - at feeling of disconnect. It’s a heart-felt film with huge ideas. As one reviewer said, it made me consider “What would I do it a set like this? ” If you’re skittish about the celebrity voices or stunt casting, don’t. David Horrible is perfect and actually quite serious in his role. Evan Rachel Wood makes you care for her Terran character. James Garner is haunting as an elder Terran. Justin Long is comical as usual. Luke Wilson was a surprise as well. The director has created a perfect small world that I want to go encourage to again and I might fair upgrade to Blu-ray for this movie alone. The music is terrific. If you’re a lover of world-building sci-fi and gigantic intriguing films you owe it to yourself to take it. I recommend this highly to any fans of arresting scif-i movies like Light Years, Extraordinary Planet, Heavy Metal and Titan A.E. honest to name a few.

The Battle for Terra was an independently produced 3D animation film that was in theaters in May. It played in some festivals like Tribeca and won Best Bewitching Feature at Ottowa Animation Festival, which is THE animation festival (Oscar nom Persepolis won the year prior) . It got rave reviews from film critics like Ebert and Variety, but was purchased by Lionsgate who didn’t market it properly, hence a disappointing box office for this gusty cramped piquant film. Which is especially a shame because in 3D it was achingly dazzling, definitely the very best exercise of 3D I’ve seen. Felt like you were swimming apt along in that other world with radiant creatures like winged blue whales that coast among the clouds.

Also important was the top notch casting. Evan Rachel Wood is especially noble as the swear of adorable alien heroine, and Brian Cox haunting as the creepy Bush-like warmonger General. David Unsuitable, one of the the best comedians out there legal now, gave brief bits of comical relief as sullen robot sidekick.

A immense movie for families, who can appreciate the visuals and drama while giving kids an sparkling intro into ethics, environmentalism, ethnocentrism, and more. This is how family movies should be–entertainment that challenges kids to consider.

“Public Enemies” proves that Michael Mann is correct up there with Martin Scorsese at directing compelling crime dramas. This film, based on a book detailing the nexus of John Dillinger, J. Edgar Hoover, and Melvin Purvis, covers the last year and a half in the life of the noted bank robber, who was branded “Public Enemy Number 1″ by Hoover, who was building what would become the FBI. Chasing Dillinger for Hoover was Purvis, who relentlessly pursued Dillinger until the fateful night outside the Biography Theater in Chicago.

Johnny Depp plays Dillinger as a fun-loving but uncertain criminal whose only concept seems to be to live life on the edge until he falls off. As usual, his performance is animated and utterly believable. Billy Crudup wonderfully plays Hoover as a man obsessed with growing the Bureau, obsessed with public relations, and obsessed with capturing John Dilliger, and Christian Bale plays Purvis as an radiant, grand, and caught in the difficult plot of trying to find Dillinger while at the same time handsome a demanding, overbearing publicity seeker.

The film features broad supporting performances from Marion Cotillard as Dillinger’s girlfriend, Billie Frechette, and Stephen Lang as a mature Bureau agent assigned to hunt Dillinger.

This is film has plenty of action and thrills, but also possesses substantial acting, sparkling writing, and masterful directing by Mann. Public Enemies is one the best films to approach out in the summer of ‘09.

“Public Enemies”, helmed by noted director Michael Mann, is a thriller of the most testosterone fueled variety. It’s a hasty paced actioner brimming at the seams with intense shootouts and a well-stocked cast of steely-eyed, square-jawed men harboring classic narcissistic complexes. Johnny Depp makes a suave, calculating Dillinger. It’s more of a manufactured character than an interpretation of the valid life Dillinger, but this is of shrimp consequence because Depp achieves mountainous theatrics with his fretful glare and devil-may-care attitude. He plays it great as I imagine Steve McQueen would’ve in his heyday, plowing through his world with a sort of darkly frigid, apathetic demeanor that suggests he doesn’t care one blueprint or the other about anything.

The supporting characters are superlative as well, particularly Stephen Dorff as Homer Van Meter. There’s an intensity to his character that Dorff really brings out. In fact, I didn’t even ogle him at first (interestingly, he looked very similar to actor Tim DeKay) . Jason Clarke, who portrays John “Red” Hamilton, is an actor primarily known for his television work. I surmise he was chosen for his striking resemblance to the genuine life criminal; fair compare his photograph to the detestable mug of Hamilton. He’s probably the most featured gangster, other than Dillinger, being that Hamilton is portrayed as his accurate hand man. Of course, Christian Bale turns in an able performance as respected G-Man Melvin Purvis - donning yet another one of his illustrious accents for the role.

The film begins in media res with an fascinating jailbreak, something which I greatly enjoyed. I was jubilant the film didn’t extinguish time trying to account for Dillinger’s childhood and upbringing. There is no hollow attempt to apply reason to his actions or status blame for his anti-social behavior. In the waste it doesn’t matter what led him to a life of crime, particularly since over the years the man has transformed from a folk hero into a veritable anecdote. It’s determined Mann’s vision was ambitious. He attempted to pack all the nuances and complexities of Dillinger’s world into only two hours and because of this the demolish product is a bit too busy. I pick up the feeling that a bit of streamlining the script might not have been an unpleasant concept. That aside, it’s positive that Mann knew what audiences wanted to peep is a rip-roarin’ occupy on the robberies, shootouts, and defiance of the law that filled the bulk of Dillinger’s life legal on up until the bitter kill. This film performs those functions in spades!

The major lacking feature of the film is that characterization takes a backseat to the action. This is, perhaps, inevitable considering the titanic ensemble cast and the fact that nearly every character is based on a very valid, very noted person. Often many seemingly racy characters never quite gel with the audience because their screentime is so brief. One such character is Gilbert Catena, portrayed by Domenick Lombardozzi (probably best known for his role on HBO’s The Wire) . Tranquil, those aspects aside, every performance here is stellar. Fair ogle at the supporting cast which includes: David Wenham, Marion Cotillard, Giovanni Ribisi, and Billy Crudup, among others. It’s my eager hope that upon its release to home video there’s an extended crop of the film because I would esteem to ogle more of these characters (especially Fine Boy Floyd, since he is only in the film for a scant couple of minutes) .

I’ve noticed many critics mention that the film unnecessarily milks the climax of the film, which is obviously Dillinger’s execution outside of the Biograph Theatre. I didn’t mind this so considerable because it’s such an iconic event of the Public Enemy era, and more than that, the film portrays Dillinger’s death with true detail and follows what we know of the valid event to the letter. The scene features numerous clips of the film Dillinger watched: Manhattan Melodrama, the gangster vehicle starring Clark Gable.

The film surmises, with obedient reason, that Dillinger probably identified with Gable’s character. It illustrates this by showing one of the haunting final scenes, when William Powell offers to have his death sentence commuted, Gable replies with “You mediate you’re doing me a favor by keeping my locked up in this joint for the rest of my life? I don’t want it. If I can’t live the scheme I want, then at least let me die the design I want.” Dillinger’s face expressed ample notion, perhaps even compassion, with this statement. It’s a tall cinematic moment, especially since the audience is very well aware of what is about to transpire in his maintain life.

I give bonus points to the production crew for so aptly depicting mid-west America during the Depression. Many real-life buildings were redressed to ogle as they did during the time and their efforts greatly enhance the atmosphere. Then there are the detailed setpieces (one of my favorites, though it’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it one, is Gilbert’s shop), the hairstyles and slick suits, the classic cars - they hit all the notes correctly. There’s even some old slang film fans will remember from gangster films made in the thirties, such the calling of prison guards “screws”.

The robbery scenes, being the lynchpin of any Dillinger fable, are somewhat brief but accurately narrate Dillinger’s tactics and methods. Also, concerning dependable history, this film does hold liberties with what really occurred (like any film does) . Perhaps the most egregious liberties are taken concerning the demises of the various gangsters. For instance, Magnificent Boy Floyd is depicted as being killed months prior to Dillinger’s death (Dillinger even references his demise to Pervis), when in fact he died months afterward. Also, Homer Van Meter survived Dillinger, only to be killed a month later. These aspects are often a considerable rotten, because a filmmaker must strike a balance between reality and entertainment - and the two do not always intersect seamlessly. If you want a version that follows the facts exclusively - capture the book.

In summation, “Public Enemies” may not be remembered as a classic action film, but it will be remembered as a classic gangster film. The most gratifying aspect is that, original for most action films, all the actors turn in very memorable performances. Some critics and the press have commented on how Bale is absent from nearly all the trailers and promotional materials for this film, but when you scrutinize it, the reason is quite understandable. This is unquestionably Depp’s film, and though I concede to not having a particular predilection for him, his role here is not to be missed. This is well worth the tag of admission!

This British documentary on *Sir Gawain and the Green Knight* is a large resource for teachers of British literature and/or history. It is not a reenactment of the play but a documentary with five parts: “King Arthur and the English Kings,” “The Kingship of Richard II,” “The Land of Arthur,” “The Green Knight,” and “The Death of the Fourteenth Century.” Bonuses include a segmented interview with Dr. David Matthews, Lecturer in Middle English, Literature, and Culture at Manchester University, and a share entitled “Chester Cathedral and the Misericords.”

The cinematography and music beget a haunting mood for the discussion of this anonymous work of literature probably from Cheshire, where the northwestern dialect of Middle English flourished in the fourteenth century. The narrator puts the work within the context of its time, including background information on the Welsh roots of the Arthurian myth and the diagram Plantagenet kings co-opted the yarn to identify the plucky figures with the ruling Norman kings. Great is made of Richard II, who made Chester a principality, bringing, it is argued, the decadence of his court to the northwest.

The video and its bonuses address issues such as the spot, theme, symbolism, and language of the poem, explaining the bob-and-wheel, alliteration, the pentangle, and the spiritual dimensions of the poem. I was eager to gaze the inclusion of the pagan Green Man as a possible interpretation of the Green Knight. Not a Unusual Ager myself, I am aware that the Green Man has been dusted off for a “current” entry into the twenty-first century, and since he had probably not completely disappeared from the Christian England of the Gawain poet, knowledge of him helps today’s student to search for a dimension of the poem that may have been unclear to previous generations of readers.

I gave the program a 5-star rating despite the fact that in the bonus interview with Dr. Matthews, the questions which appear on hide enjoy misspellings that detract from the otherwise high quality of this documentary. With that caveat, I highly recommend this video for anyone who desires to learn more about medieval English culture.

When the news broke that MGM had the audacity to remake the hallowed 1935 classic “Mutiny on the Bounty” starring Clark Gable and Charles Laughton, the critics were aghast. As the news leaked out about pain in production, they whipped themselves into a self-righteous frenzy. Brando was a lightening rod for criticism because he was celebrated as arrogant hothead. Compared with Gable, who was universally loved and adored, Brando was a boor. It was almost sacrilegious to place Brando in any share Gable had played. When the film opened, it never had a chance. It was ripped to shreds. Brando was ridiculed as a lower class character actor who couldn’t step up to the portion, and derided for his abominable attempt at an English accent. The film was a box office loser and critics smugly declared they told us so.

The film was beset by problems throughout production. The full-scale replica of the Bounty arrived on residence two months after the film was scheduled to open shooting. There were three deaths among the film’s personnel and the film ran well over budget. The biggest problems were the result of Brando’s constant temper tantrums as he tried to rewrite the entire film from the area. At least six writers came and went. After countless confrontations, director Carol Reed gave up and pause to be replaced by Lewis Milestone (”All Unruffled on the Western Front’) . Milestone was an utterly intractable director that Brando couldn’t bully. The result was a battle between the immovable object and the irresistible force, with daily emotional pyrotechnics that further delayed the film. Although Milestone usually prevailed in the fracases, this film turned out to be his last in a 37-year career.

Over the years, the critics have continued to pillory the film, but the public generally receives it more favorably as time passes. Though I often disagree with the masses, in this case I concur. Having seen both the 1935 and 1962 versions, I catch the latter. Gable is clearly more charming and dashing in the role, but Brando gives the more complete performance. Gable’s Christian seems far less ruffled by the events that transpire on the Bounty, whereas Brando accomplishes a believable transition from the cavalier rogue to an grand hero who endures self-torment over the treasonous act. Though Brando’s English accent is oft ridiculed, I have heard far worse. Piece of the scrape probably stemmed from the fact that the accent he attempted to imitate was very upper crust and he delivered it with a determined sneering tone that made it seem like he was mocking the English. Unprejudiced hearing that accent from the same lips that gave us, “I coulda been a contenda” was a kind of ironic comedy unto itself.

Between the Bligh portrayed by Charles Laughton and that depicted by Trevor Howard in the remake, Howard wins hands down for pure detestability. Most of the production values, such as music, status get and costumes were safe in the remake. Moreover, the remake was more historically honest than the unusual.

The film features a youthful Richard Harris in the role of Mills, who gives an pleasant performance of the petulant sailor. Also worthy is the resplendent Tarita, a native Tahitian who plays Christian’s adore interest Maimiti, and does a scorching belly dance. This was Tarita’s only film, but to anyone who has seen the film, she will not be soon forgotten.

This is an superior film. It was nominated for seven Oscars including Best Record, but it was shut out, trampled by “Lawrence of Arabia”. It is highly enchanting with fabulous costumes, props and sets, fantastic locations and photography, and some terrific performances. Though many will disagree, I rated it a 10/10. If one can step befriend from the controversy that swirled around this film when it debuted, it is an easy film to be pleased.

Ok. First things first. Let us not forget that this film is based on the trilogy of books by Charles Nordorff and James Norman Hall. These books are fictional accounts based on exact events, and recount William Bligh as a sadistic, brutal tyrant instead of the accomplished seaman he truly was. After all he was one of the best foul-weather commanders of his day and a navigator of such quality that the charts he drew were calm frail by the British navy lawful up until the second world war.

I have read among other reviewers of Bligh’s “trademark discipline and lashings”. This is objective not right. Bligh himself was positive that he would not lose a single member of the ship’s crew on his expedition, and in fact, only flogged one man on the outward voyage (an act which he bitterly regretted!) .

He was a passionate man, that had risen through the ranks and he was sure to succeed on the mission appointed to him. His only downfall was that he lacked imagination, he was a pedantic man that did everything by the book, this made him inflexible to situations. There was no more a caring individual that attempted to round Cape Horn for 30 days, do you assume that a crew that had suffered uncouth punishment from the begin of their paddle would then suffer such grueling conditions for so long and not determine this point to mutiny? It is testiment to Bligh’s ability to boom tha his men carried on working for him until he decided theirs was a lost cause.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mutiny on the Bounty! Click Here

From the time the Bounty landed at Tahiti, Bligh let his men down. He allowed them to carry on for the next 5 months doing whatever they chose, while he isolated himself in scientific studies. If Bligh had mustered his crew regularly and spent time sailing the Pacific whilst his gardeners prepared their cargo, discipline would have been maintained. Ultimately, when the ship Weighed anchor and departed Matavai Bay, complacency and sloth had taken root among the crew. This then would understandably lead to bitterness and resentment for the return to naval discipline.

I have read also, that the mutiny, when it happened, happened very (too) fast and suddenly in the film. Well, this IS exactly what happened, Christian had decided to hasten the ship and his abuser alone and on a makeshift raft. It was only after speaking to Edward Young that he found that there would be others amongst the crew who would be willing to aid him bewitch the ship and return to Tahiti. Thus events were do into state that happened very snappily indeed, events that Christian would bitterly regret for the rest of his life.

This film also suggests that Bligh and Christian were unaquainted before the fateful voyage, this again is not legal as they had sailed together on three previous occasions. Richard Hough, in his worthy book, Capt. Bilgh and Mr. Christian, suggests that their relationship could have had undertones of a homosexual nature. This could be quite possible, as it was not exclusive for sailors who were living in such terminate quarters for long periods of time to behold to each other for relief, although the Articles of War forbade it, and anyone found guilty of this “crime” faced the death penalty! It is certainly upright that Bligh showed the young Master’s Mate a ample deal of favouritism, promoting him to Acting Lieutenant after landing at Tenerife. It is also well documented that Bligh frequently invited Christian to his cabin. In fact Bigh had sent an invitation to him on the night before the mutiny, which Christian had declined. It is possible that Bligh had become resentful of Christian’s relationship with Isobella (Christian’s name for Miamiti, after his aunt), and took his jealousy out on him by humiliating Christian in front of the crew. This would go some method to justify Christian’s reapeted cries of “I AM IN HELL!”.

It should be notorious that Bligh was recognised as a national hero on his retrun to England and absolved of all blame for the loss of his ship. It wasn’t until he left again on another voyage that the Courts Martial for the remain mutineers, who had now been bought home, took position and that public belief started to turn against him, and he began to be portrayed as the tyrant shown in this film. But, it should be remembered that at the time of his death, Bligh ahd reached the base of Vice Admiral of The Blue, no mean feat for such an “abusive” man!

Brando’s Foppish, Arrogant aristocratic narrate of Christian is off target. Christian’s family were not aristocratic. They were a well-to-do family from Cumberland, but not so high up the social ladder as shown here.

Enjoy this film, I did. But relish it for what it is, a fictional account of adventure on the high seas. Brando is on top compose, camping it up in his role (obviously out of the control of the director!), the photography is dazzling as are the locations. The script is curious and droll, and the rest of the cast terrific. Trevor Howard’s Bligh is a slight too one dimensional, but then that is exactly what this represent is trying to explain.

I give this film four stars unbiased for the sheer enjotment I got from it. The missing fifth star is for the truth. I won’t map comparisons with the earlier Laughton/Gable film, or the later Hopkins/Gibson film, as they are each luscious films in their bear fair and are definately worth viewing. Although the latter goes a dinky more for the truth.

As others have mentioned, this is perhaps the only pro-war film ever made about our involvement in Vietnam, either at the time of the war or since.

Pretty remarkable these days, nobody espouses a pro-war stance on the Vietnam conflict. It was not a “edifying” war, after all, and the war will always be share and parcel with the agony of America’s social chaos in the leisurely 60’s and early 70’s. However, at the time, the social battle lines were well defined between the peaceniks and the hawks; those against the war, and those all in favor of it. Without the thirty-plus years of hindsight to befriend them set this conflict in perspective, the hawks were stunning gung-ho. Likewise, the the peaceniks, who view that if we impartial “esteem each other” everything would be alright, looks exquisite naive and childish. If only the world were so simple.

Like the war, this film engenders strong feelings in those who peer it. The DUKE was a known hawk, and you can peek it shine through in every line, and in every scene. Like most hawks at the time, I suspect that The DUKE simply notion Vietnam was honest like any other war (most likely, World War II), and it was incomprehensible to them that anyone would be against it. The film, in turn, reflects the hawk viewpoint.

In other words, you could substitute the Vietnamese with the Japanese in WWII, and the film would be more or less the same (safe, upstanding Americans vs. titanic dreadful empire) . The recall of the enemy general is pure WWII melodrama. The character of Petersen, the “scrounger”, is also a stock character from a WWII movie. The staging of the action, the commando raid, blowing up a bridge, etc., all roar WWII.

DUKE co-directs, and despite being filmed in Georgia (which looks nothing like Southeast Asia!), the results are really elegant estimable. The raid to grasp the enemy general is amusing, but tense and intelligent nevertheless. The characterizations are solid. The film flows nicely, and isn’t too long or too short. The cinematography is workable, and at times, even impressive. There’s plenty of action, too!

When you witness DUKE react to the child running from helicopter to helicopter looking for Petersen, you cannot assist but have respect for this film. Certainly one of the best endings in American film history follows. Politics and anti-war sentiment of today’s PC society aside, this is a ample war film that honors the best of the best; the Green Berets.

Let me select a moment and say a word or two about David Janssen’s role as George Beckworth, the reporter for a left-wing and anti-war newspaper. The character is a small too certain, and at first, a diminutive too strong on the anti-war sentiment. His conversion was a diminutive too predictable, but the handling of his conversion to pro-war is very well-handled. Ultimately, I believe it was a believable transformation, and this is due entirely to Janssen’s talent. In the hands of another, less skilled actor, the Beckworth character could have been a titanic sore point, but Janssen makes Beckworth a mild force, a wall of anti-war sentiment needing to be erroded away by the reality of the area he finds himself in. In many ways, I believe Janssen’s underplayed advance for Beckworth makes him seem more right, and ultimately sells the character. It helps sell the movie too, despite our new perspective on the war.

Appearing in supporting roles are Jack Soo (Gash Yemana on “Barney Miller”), George Takei (Sulu on “Star Trail”), and Bruce Cabot. Cabot had starred in a astronomical many films, and “The Green Beret” is one of his last. He was a accepted DUKE co-star, appearing with DUKE in “Hellfighters”, “Substantial Jake”, “Chisum”, “The War Wagon”, “In Harm’s Draw”, “McLintock!”, “Hatari!”, and others. Cabot is probably most well-known for rescuing Fay Wray from King Kong. Also on hand is The DUKE’s son, Patrick Wayne. Patrick appears as the commander of a Seabee team, following in his father’s footsteps (DUKE starred in the noted homage to the outfit, “The Fighting Seabees”) .

DUKE fans should try to locate a copy of the video “No Substitute For Victory” (available on this dwelling), in which DUKE hosts a right-wing documentary peruse at our reasons for fighting in Southeast Asia. Watching this documentary after the film will give the viewer recent insights into the thinking of the hawks at the time, and their spot during the Vietnam conflict.

If you ever read Gustav Hasford’s “The Short-Timers” (which “Pudgy Metal Jacket” was based on) you know how he felt about this movie: “Let’s examine the Duke and Mr. Sulu karate-chop Victor Charlie in a Kodicolor fantasy about Vietnam.” In other words, he conception it was bunk. So does everyone else on the left, who have bought into the tale that Vietnam was a purely guerilla war and that the human-wave assaults employed by the NVA/VC on Col. Kirby’s camp in the film would never have happened in loyal life. In point of fact almost 90% of the fighting in Vietnam was of the obsolete type in the Central Highlands or the valleys (”We Were Soldiers”) while only 10% of the troops were employed in the rice paddies you notice in movies like “Platoon.” Whenever the NVA fought out in the inaugurate, a la the Tet Offensive, they were well and truly beaten, but their leadership was ruthless and understood that by trading 5 Vietnamese lives for one American, the U.S. will to fight would eventually smash. They knew the American public had only tepid succor for Vietnam and would not obtain the losses. The result, of course, we all know. Hanoi Jane what she wanted and so did Uncle Ho. Too dreadful Jane didn’t go wait on in say, 1975 and expend some time in a re-education camp. They could have taken pics of her in a tiger cage, eating bugs and rotting from typhus.

If you are reading this you probably know the legend of the movie.

John Wayne’s Col. Kirby and his elite Special Forces “A” Team (no, not the one with Hannibal and Face and B.A. Barracus) is sent to Vietnam to set imperfect camps which offer protection to the local farmers from the murderous Viet Cong (whose crimes against their fill people are well documented here) . The soldiers roar the locals how to fight while providing basic medical care and 20th century improvements to their primeval arrangement of life. There is the usual substantial John Wayne type battle as the VC try to overrun the camp, followed by a commando raid deep into enemy territory, and a tragic-heroic ending. But the movie is more than the sum of its parts. It is not mere entertainment, it is personal propiganda, designed to note the Duke’s argument for why America was fighting in Vietnam at all. The only failing is its sappiness and jingoism, which build it easy for opponents to ridicule. But making fun of it doesn’t occupy away the fact that the Duke’s argument was based on something he is rarely credited for — human decency. What “proper” did we have in Vietnam? I guess the same “legal” we had to land on the beaches of Normandy. We had no “moral” at all — it was unbiased the “correct thing to do”, to aid a terrible government (South Vietnam) against a great worse government (North Vietnam) that conventional methods like mass killings of teachers, civil servants, nuns, missionaries, and village chiefs to destabilze the South and forcibly unite the country. You can argue about the legitimacy of taking sides in a civil war all day, but any country that uses methods like burying people alive and raping women to death as a matter of military policy probably deserves to be opposed, yes?

Anyway, let me buy a moment to say I Fancy THIS FREAKIN’ MOVIE. Growing up, edifying dilapidated Washington D.C. Channel 20 (remember when you only had ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and your one local channel? Channel 20 was ours) played this movie, (along with “The Battle of the Bulge” and “The Bridge at Remagen” and some other classics) about once every other day. Even the belief of it brings a smile to my face. Here was a guy, John Wayne, who had the guts to earn a film this flag-shakingly correct flee at a time when patriotism was growing unfashionable and millions of people were abandoning and spitting on the ideals that he embodied — which, by the plan, a few of us collected possess honest. As a movie, “The Green Berets” has a hard ideology of anti-communism and shows the newfangled Special Forces as a sort of elite brotherhood consecrated to fight against it. I contemplate a lot of the disapprove directed against this movie comes from the surity of Kirby’s (meaning John Wayne’s) beliefs. They are rock-solid and not up for debate or negotiation. He understands what will (and did) happen to Vietnam if the North wins the war, and fights bitterly to prevent this from happening, while simultaneously trying to collect over a stubborn journalist who has legitimate doubts about our involvement. No seek information from, this movie is jingoistic and predictable, a Vietnam war movie packed in WWII casing, but who cares?

“The Note That Almost Wasn’t.”

That’s the most surprising lesson learned about the nature of television production — as told by the show’s creator Amy Sherman-Palladino — in the WB’s stellar GILMORE GIRLS release: Ms. S-P had pitched a variety of programs for WB executives, and, when they asked for more, she made up an notion on the residence — with no preparation or background detail — which the executives took! Then, Ms. S-P had to go and originate it.

GILMORE GIRLS arguably stands as a benchmark in television history. In some ways, the program is like SEINFELD: if you don’t accumulate it, you won’t rep it. In other ways, it’s a high quality Hallmark Channel movie-of-the-week, currently stretching out beyond its fourth season and soon to be entering its fifth. Aloof, in more ways, there’s absolutely nothing else like it on television.

GG is far more than unbiased the fable of Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter, Lorelai “Rory” Gilmore: it’s the record of the fictional town known as Star’s Hollow — the dreamland for bed-n-breakfast businesses — and the queer assortment of characters who happen to live, work, and breathe there. While the centerpiece is clearly the Gilmore family — a contemporization of the BRADY BUNCH, if there could ever be such a thing — the lumber of the expose is, to its help, the plethora of wonderfully imagined and uniquely quirky townsfolk who populate the secondary storylines.

And, yes, the acting is top notch. The direction is absolutely noble. The writing is, by far, some of the most deserving work being build up on the boob tube today.

Still, GG is on the WB, meaning that it will, more than likely, never collect the kind of ratings the expose deserves. Like STAR Trudge, GILMORE will obtain its honest financial potential in syndication and DVD releases … distinguished like this novel release of the 21 1st season episodes.

To my delight, I’m fair discovered these television characters. My wife has watched the explain since the beginning, but I always dismissed it as a “chick flick,” tuning it out to expend my time on other shows. However, she convinced me to give it a chance this past season (its fourth), and now — here am I — writing a review for Season 1 that we watched together virtually non-stop. Others here have raved about the quality of the writing — the upright lifeblood of the program — and I wouldn’t even attempt to do GILMORE a disservice in discussing it other than to add “every well-behaved thing that’s been said here is absolutely not enough to sanctify how well, apparently, every episode is written.”

Honestly, GILMORE is really that excellent.

Truth be told, the extras are surprisingly thin — but of helpful quality — on this 1st season release, especially considering the fact that the point to is currently in production for the WB. Disc 6 includes a handful of deleted scenes; a mini-doc with some revealing insights from the show’s creator, cast, and crew; and some scenes from various episodes edited together in a fraction that tries to choose the ‘essence’ of what makes GILMORE GIRLS as powerful a television achievement as it is. One would mediate that Warner Brothers would’ve offered more — in-depth interviews with the series cast OR, minimally, an audio commentary or two — but, sadly, that isn’t the case. As a result, one could argue that the studio — as Amy Sherman-Palladino points out in the scant 30 puny documentary — has underestimated the intelligence of its audience, focusing only on the commercialism of the program and not feeding the fanbase brain.

The 6-disc station is presented in tubby conceal format. The video quality is splendid. The sound quality is beneficial (there are a handful of scenes that are hard to hear b/c of verbal pacing, not production issues) . Overall, this is one stout package only lessened by what they chose not to provide: audio commentaries.

No vampires to waste. No kryptonite “Freaks of the Week.” No friggin creeks that you wish the series’ namesake to drown in. Nothing but a well-written, wonderfully cast expose that is long overdue for a DVD release. When the first season DVD release hits shelves, the fourth season should be terminate to wrapping up on the WB, and hopefully will continue everything about the display that made the first episodes so scrumptious.

Set in a fictional Connecticut town called Stars Hollow, The Gilmore Girls follows the lives of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, a a single mother and teenage daughter who portion a bond that is as noteworthy best friends as it is that of a mother and child. The series begins with Rory’s acceptance into the prestigious Chilton Academy and Lorelai’s frantic desire to acquire that happen, which distinguished to her chagrin, involves the befriend of her enjoy mother, Emily Gilmore (played by the generous Kelly Bishop) and father Richard (Edward Herman) . Growing up the rebellious daughter of wealthy society types and becoming pregnant at age 16 didn’t exactly endear them to each other. It is Lorelai’s relationship with her parents that drives noteworthy of her character’s motivation.

While life as a single mother might be hard, Lorelai is not without a aid system. Stars Hollow is populated with an impressive collection of brilliant characters, from the gruff, flannel-wearing diner owner, Luke, to Lorelai’s coworker and best friend Sookie and the annoying Frenchman, Michel.

Rory, too, has a group of discontinuance friends and even closer enemies. Lane Kim, daughter of a Korean Bible beater is the music obsessed best friend, Dean (Jared Padelecki) is her first boyfriend and Paris, her academic and social rival. As is the case with basically anything on the WB, Chad Michael Murray also finds his plan into her life, as do Madeline and Louise, Paris’ oversexed friends and Chilton classmates.

Some of the highlight episodes from this debut season include Concert Interupticus - which featured a Bangles performance and hinted that there might be some degree of feeling beneath Paris’ frosty exterior, and Emily in Wonderland - where Emily redecorates Rory’s bedroom. There are 20 more episodes, each with moments or more of trustworthy wit and even more agreeable heart.

All of this considered, Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, as Lorelai and Rory, are the show’s driving force. Their chemistry, combined with the clever dialogue and rapid-fire delivery, have made this one of the best shows on tv. And now, at long last, on DVD!

This movie is so touching. The music is astounding. We collect to gaze and hear the staunch Jerry Garcia. Understand his savor of American music. Jerry Garcia was Americana before Americana and the Magazine No Depression. This was the first day that this movie opened in Boston. I was there. I wanted to speed out on the streets and say Hey, advance in and you must stare this movie that has so grand heart. At the extinguish of the movie, I concept the spoken tributes to Jerry Garcia that were being said as the long song Arabia played on was too grand. I unprejudiced could have listened and watched two titanic people, who also happened to be big musicians, play on their absorb. Their music stood by itself without needing the spoken words. In the kill, it doesn’t matter. If you fair treasure music, you will adore this movie. If you want to glance and hear a warm movie about friendship, you will treasure this movie. David Grisman should accept an Oscar for best documentary 2001.

I can’t praise this film enough. Gillian Grisman, the director, had a penchant for making home movies which often happened to include Jerry Garcia and David Grisman working together on tasteful, emotionally performed acoustic music which included faded south traditionals, and folk music from around the world, as well as some originals. Jerry and David enjoyed a friendship and deep musical connection that stretched out over 30 years. It’s informal, most of the footage taken without any projects in mind, around the studio in the basement of Grisman’s house, with his family around (the dog pops in and out of shots), and considerable footage taken from performances at Sweetwater and the Warfield in the early 90s, with Joe Craven and Jim Kerwin. There’s interviews with Peter Rowan and Vassar Clements from Passe And In The Plot (Garcia and Grisman’s first project together, 1973) . It’s also got quiet photos reaching befriend to 1961 of Grisman and Garcia, who met at a Bill Monroe concert at Sunset Park in 1964, and excerpts of an audio interview Jerry did for Guitar Magazine in 1991. The film also shows Jerry in a very comfortable setting, something that the stage of Grateful Tedious shows didn’t necessarily afford him. It’s nice to spy him performing without any pressure of being the patriarch of the deadheads, simply being fragment of a band, having a profitable time with some friends, playing with gigantic dynamics with a group of very talented musicians. (Joe Craven, how many instruments, exactly, do you play? Unbelievable.) If you’re a fan of acoustic music, you really ought to check out this movie - it’s very satisfying.

Me being a Bruce Dickinson fan to the max, I decided to rent this film after being wrathful about it finally being released here. Originally released in the UK as “Chemical Wedding”, The film is about Professor Haddo, a bumbling teacher who offers himself for a transformation experiment and soon becomes possessed by Aleister Crowley, which soon turns the school (and the town) upside down.

This film is a resplendent cold movie, but incredibly flawed one. It was Co-written by Bruce Dickinson and directed by Julian Doyle, and stars Simon Callow as Haddo, turning in his best performance. We also secure a brief gape into Crowley before his death (played by John Shrapnel), and a cameo by Brucey himself (as the guy with thick rimmed glasses at the beginning) .

There are lots of flaws though. The film feels really rushed, I wanted to sort of know more about Crowley’s life in general. There’s a bit too mighty sex in this film- I know Crowley believed in sexual magic, but did we really need that sweaty orgy scene? They could have implied it instead of making it like 8 minutes long. And I’ll admit the effects were a bit cheesy, but then again this IS a extreme budget movie.

Anyways, this film is worth it for the finale alone despite the cheesy special effects. This is a elegant pleasant movie, but be aware… this is definitely not for everyone.

I first became aware of Aleister Crowley through press reports that Jimmy Page of led Zeppelin, had been studying the occultist. A period of reading the books of Dennis Wheatley brought a greater awareness of the occult where Crowley’s name was frequently mentioned.

This film begins with the impending death of the man whilst being visited by two students from Cambridge University (UK) . Unbiased before he dies he curses one of the students and inflicts serious injury to him. Sixty years on, at Cambridge there is a conjunction between scientific experiments in a virtual world and the continuing tradition of the occult within the confines of the University. During that conjunction, one of the dons becomes possessed by the spirit of Crowley and graduall transforms into him

The transformation presages a series of events which appear to have been predestined by Crowley and his followers many years before. The purpose of the events gradually unfolds, as they tend to do in these matters, into the return of the fallen angel.

Simon Callow, the RSC actor excels in his portrayal of the restored Crowley. His energies deem the larger than life personality of the occultist and the eminent acts for which he was execrable during his lifetime. This is a film of graphic sexuality and bodily functions. Although there is nudity and depictions of orgies and other sexual acts, they are not exhibited except in their role as piece of the magickal power. The acts are more of the means by which spells are enacted, a transference of the power of the body into other distinguished forms.

Many people will collect this film objectionable for a variety of reasons, the subject of the occult or satanic like, the sexual nature and expend of profanities, the rejection of christian sensibilities or for many other reasons. Nevertheless it is a much depiction of the life of Crowley itself. Ultimately, in the final scenes of the film, very reminiscent of the previous fim, The Devil Rides Out, the world is restored to order.

Given the difficult subject matter, I believe that this film has done a first rate job in enlightening the life and works of Aleister Crowley and is to be commended for it.

Having never watched the Sopranos (heresy, I know), I didn’t have any preconceived notions of what type of person Edie Falco should or should not be playing. Many of my friends say me that the character of Nurse Jackie is a far wail from her Carmelo Soprano alter-ego.

Jackie is a fat time nurse in a public hospital in Novel York City. Like most nurses and emergency medical workers, she is overworked and underpaid and trying to acquire do with what life has handed to her. On the surface, she is hardworking nurse who is a loving mother of two limited girls and a devoted wife to Kevin Payton who runs a local bar. Scratch the surface impartial a small bit and the perfect facade peels away to convey a drug addicted adulterer who regularly breaks the laws in order to suit her bear perceived morals.

Nurse Jackie tackles quite a few heavy subjects during its initial season including assisted suicide, underage children caring for their parents, as well as the rigors of raising children who aren’t quite perfect. Medical dramas are a dime a dozen and the comedy versions fair always seem to be lacking substance, however the staff writers of Nurse Jackie do a masterful job of mixing the heavy subjects in with very lighthearted, almost slapstick humor.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Nurse Jackie: Season One! Click Here

While the Peyton household hasn’t been expanded on very noteworthy (honestly you could replace the husband and two itsy-bitsy girls with bricks and you probably wouldn’t witness powerful inequity), the hospital staff shines in every draw. Doctor O’Hara is the archetypal rich doctor as well as the “straight man” for most of Jackie’s exploits. While her character was explored a puny bit in season one, there wasn’t a lot invested yet. Doctor Cooper is the hotshot doctor straight out of Med School looking to construct his effect. He’s cute and naive and looking to acquire positive everyone thinks of him as their buddy while trying to become a serious doctor at the same time. Zoey is the nurse counterpart to Cooper; the truly naive nursing student straight from school who hasn’t had her spirit crushed by the valid world. The rest of the hospital staff, Miss Akalitus, Mo-Mo, and Thor, all play exquisite comedic foils throughout the season. The cast list would not be complete without the mention of Eddie, the hospital pharmacist who “supplies” prescription pills to Jackie because he believes he is doing his duty as a gracious boyfriend. Eddie unfortunately does not know that he is being old by Jackie who has a satisfied family at home as well as a husband with whom we are led to occupy she is mild in esteem with.

Fans of shows like ER will savor the drama, however it should be notorious that Nurse Jackie is relatively light on the medical science side of the house. While drugs are described, procedures mentioned, there is very itsy-bitsy step-by-step-to-recovery type documentation on a per patient level. You’ll eye gunshot wounds near in, chest tubes inserted, CBC and toxicity reports ordered but not a lot of breakdown into why a doctor orders which test, why they should peep at alternatives, etc like in ER. Nurse Jackie was written in order to revolve around the nurse not the doctor, and as such there is a worthy higher emphasis placed on patient care rather than impartial medical procedures.

My only gripe with Nurse Jackie is that there is zero conflict resolution throughout the entire season. Season one ended with a cliffhanger and as with all other Showtime/HBO episodic shows, the next season will not premier until sometime in the next year. All of the “will she catch caught? ” questions that you perform from episode one will calm be there after you enact episode twelve (with a few dozen extra questions thrown in by then for honorable measure) . Other than that, Nurse Jackie is a sizable demonstrate, and I negate that the fact that I want Season Two to launch upright now! attests to how addicting the series is.

For those looking for conflict resolution or some sort of psychological undressing of Jackie - you have the putrid point to. Jackie is too hard for that sort of Oprah candy. She has been hardened by the life she has lived in the Emergency Room. Like a soldier on the frontlines of battle, she is undergoing horrific trauma on a daily basis with no time to process or obtain healthier ways of coping. Clearly she is spiraling towards some sort of shatter, which she is doing her best to stem off with drugs. But it is inevitable. This is what drives the point to - how terminate can the writers consume Jackie to the brink but not push her over? (When and if they do push her over that brink and into rehad, the explain will lose its momentum - not obvious what season two will peer like.) I don’t deem the writers intended her to be some sort of “character” tied up in a spruce bow of conflict, conflict resolution - hopefully in the third act. This display is more like The Wire, it intends to reveal life as it is in determined segments of our society and people, flawed people, doing whatever it takes to deal with it and cope - not always successfully. An Emergency Room in Queens is the belly of this beast that is our healthcare system and society - characters like Jackie are intended to mediate the sickness that is the system.
